A young black man in a fancy suit stands before the monument on the shore, clutching a shiny souvenir baseball hat and a windbreaker jacket with the words "Tiger Pride" on the back. The gleaming, expensive sports paraphernalia could not belong to the young black man, who looks utterly ordinary and unmotivated. No one could pretend to be a sports fan wearing that jacket, not in Mississippi, and certainly not on a windy Sunday morning in the summer of 1964. So who is this black man? Clearly he has come to see the statues of two white college students: Christopher Columbus, a genial fellow who is said to have brought civilization to an ignorant people, and his white companion, John Cabot, who in 1497 landed at a place that is now known as Port Columbus, the first American city. More than two centuries after the American Revolution, its political and educational leaders still insist that John and Christopher Columbus were the first Europeans to establish permanent settlements in the New World, that they discovered the North and South American continents, and that it is for that reason they are immortalized on Mississippi's shores. In his 1964 visit, the black man was representing an overwhelming majority of black Mississippians, who have not believed in that legend for more than half a century. The man with the souvenir in the statue's outstretched hand is the great unacknowledged brother of the slave who chiseled the figures into the Italian marble, and the man who brought them to life as an act of defiant disrespect is probably the artist-in-residence at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Hanging behind the man's shoulder is a large, recently mounted placard, "In Honor of John and Christopher Columbus." The caption reads, "In honor of John and Christopher Columbus, Brought to Life by Stonewall Jackson Jackson, Georgia; and Brought to Port Columbus, Mississippi, by the Honorable Dr. Martin Luther King, Alabama. June 2, 1964." No one may have known that then, but anyone with black skin could read the meaning of this photograph easily, and even a white South Carolinian could sense the building revolt. And yet the black man had come
